Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and it is a type of therapy that is used to treat trauma-related disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The therapy involves the use of eye movements, tapping or other bilateral stimulation to help the patient process traumatic memories and decrease the emotional and physical distress associated with them.

During an EMDR session, the patient is asked to recall a traumatic memory while focusing on a specific external stimulus, such as the therapist’s moving finger or a series of beeps played through headphones. This external stimulation is believed to help the brain reprocess the memory in a way that reduces its emotional intensity and allows the patient to integrate the experience into their broader life story.

EMDR can be very effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
