Trauma refers to an event in someone's life that is shocking to them in a painful and profound way.
It can happen to a person of any age and can intensely impact their life, making them feel overwhelmed and powerless.
Many people "recover" with no mental health help, or ideally, seek help not long after the event occurs. But for some the trauma is too difficult to bear and they file it away and try to forget it happened. Unfortunately for most people who try to cope in this fashion they find avoidance ultimately does not work. These people think the memories have been dealt with satisfactorily-but find that the nightmares, fears, intrusive thoughts and sadness just don't go away.
